Description
The shippon, or cattle shed, located in the farmyard to the southeast of South Yarde Farmhouse, dates from the early 19th century. It is constructed of stone rubble with some cob on the rear wall and a course of cob below the eaves on the south wall, topped by a half-hipped corrugated iron roof. The building has a rectangular plan and is situated in the southwest corner of the farmyard, facing south into a narrow yard. It is a single-storey structure with a loft, featuring three notable round-headed doorways with 20th-century plank doors made from wood sourced from the farm, along with two loft doors. Inside, there are roughly-dressed crossbeams. This shippon is part of a remarkably well-preserved group of farm buildings at South Yarde and is very important to the setting of the nearby grade I medieval house.
