Description

Howards Mill is a farmhouse that likely dates back to the 16th century, although earlier fabric may be hidden within. It features painted rendered stone rubble and cob construction, topped with a thatched roof and gable ends. The inner room has a lean-to corrugated iron roof. There is a rendered stone rubble stack at the right gable end and a stone rubble front lateral hall stack with brick quoins and capping. The layout consists of three rooms and a wide cross-passage, which is divided axially to create a small unheated rear room. The parlour is located to the right of the passage, while the hall, heated by the front lateral stack, and the inner room, which has been reduced to a single storey in the 20th century, are to the left. Although the roof structure has not been inspected, it is said to be of smoke-blackened cruck construction, suggesting that the hall was originally open to the roof. The inner room appears to be a later addition.

The exterior is two storeys high with a two-window range and features early 20th-century fenestration. Each floor of the hall has a three-light casement with three panes per light, and there is a small four-paned window in the inner room at the left end. Above the wide porch, which has a thatched lean-to roof and a plank door, there is another three-light casement with two panes per light. There are no rear outshuts.

Inside, the hall has a single deep chamfered cross ceiling beam, and the fireplace features a rendered cambered lintel. To the right of the passage, there is a plank and muntin screen that is five planks wide, with chamfered muntins. The inner room has been entirely remodelled in the 20th century, and the roof structure has not been inspected.
