Description
The stone retaining walls forming a moat are located approximately 5 to 10 meters west of Brightly Barton. These walls are medieval in origin, although their exact date is uncertain. The stone rubble walls, which are about 3 meters apart, create three sides of a square, with the eastern side, closest to the current building, having been infilled. The moat is believed to be around 3 meters deep. Originally, the house was situated in the center of this site but was likely moved to its current location in the 17th century. This moat represents a unique survival in North Devon, a region that has very few moated sites.
