Description
The Masonic Temple, built in 1899 by HM Gardner of Ilfracombe, features a front made of bath stone ashlar, while the side walls are rendered. The roof is covered with asbestos slates and red ridge tiles. The building has a narrow oblong plan and is designed in the style of a classical temple, showcasing columns with capitals of four different orders.
The temple is a single storey with three round-arched openings that have moulded archivolts supported by plain-shafted columns. The central entrance includes a six-panelled door and a patterned fanlight, flanked by paired columns, with a Composite column on the left and a Corinthian column on the right. On either side of the entrance, there are round-arched windows with small panes of frosted glass bordered by narrow red panes, and a transom at the springing level. There is a single Ionic column on both the left and right sides.
The entire front is flanked by full-height, paired Tuscan columns that are set forward, supporting an entablature and triangular pediment. The entablature features a plaque inscribed with "MASONIC TEMPLE" in raised letters, and the tympanum displays the Masonic emblem along with the date A.D. 1899. Due to the slope of the ground, the left pair of columns stands on a high pedestal that includes a white marble slab carved with the Masonic emblem and an inscription detailing the laying of the stone by Worshipful Brother C.C. Davie on May 10, 1899, signed by sculptor JP Huxtable of Ilfracombe.
The side walls contain only one opening, which is a doorway with a six-panelled door located on the right side. The front area railing features spear-head uprights and standards, alternating with pairs of uprights that share a looped top. The interior has not been inspected. The Masonic Temple is part of a group with Northfield House and No. 3 Northfield Road.
