Description

This is a group of three chest tombs located about 7 metres southeast of the chancel of the Church of St George. They date from the late 19th century and are made of slate. The tombs are coffin-shaped with panelled sides and oversailing moulded lids, all dedicated to members of the Shapland family. The easternmost tomb commemorates Ann Shapland, who died in 1868. Among the pair to the east, the southern tomb commemorates George Shapland, who died in 1861, while the northern tomb is for Marianna Shapland, who died in 1872. This is an unusual grouping of tombs.
