Description
Newtown Methodist Chapel is a Wesleyan Methodist chapel built in 1849, as indicated by the datestone. The building is constructed of stone rubble, with snecked stone on the south side facing the road, and features a slate roof that is gabled at both ends. The architectural style is Gothick.
The chapel has a small rectangular plan with the entrance located at the west end and a 19th-century lean-to addition at the east end. The south side has three windows, while the north side has two, all of which are 2-centred arched in the Gothick style and include intersecting glazing bars. The west end features a central 2-centred arched doorway with a recessed door, flanked by two 2-centred arched blind recesses that are painted with intersecting glazing bars. Above the west door is the datestone from 1849, which reads "WESLEYAN CHAPEL." The 19th-century lean-to at the east end has a doorway on the south side.
Surrounding the chapel at the west end is a set of 19th-century cast iron railings on a stone plinth, which also extends along the south side. The railings at the west end have shaped brackets and are divided into bays by standards topped with spiky fleur de lis finials. The interior has not been inspected but is noted to have a 20th-century ceiling. Overall, the chapel remains very unspoiled externally.
