Description

Higher Slade Cottage is a house, originally a farmhouse, dating back to the 17th century, possibly with earlier origins. It has been significantly altered in the 19th and 20th centuries. The building is constructed of rubble slate, whitewashed to the front, with roofs of Welsh slate and synthetic slates. Originally, the house likely had a conventional three-room cross-passage plan, but it is now a two-room through-passage plan with a narrow dairy and service area to the rear, and a further unit to the left, now a garage with a bedroom above. A storage wing at the rear creates an L-shaped plan overall. The house is situated across a hillside, resulting in three different roof levels. A stack is present on one terminal and another on the ridge.

The front of the house is two stories high and has an irregular arrangement of windows. To the right of the passage are two small-paned casement windows, one blocked above; to the left, two 12-pane horned sash windows, with a large gabled dormer above containing a three-light casement. A garage door is located on the left. Casement windows are also present on the side returns, and an external bake oven is to the right. The rear wing is significantly patched, with some brickwork.

Inside, the house features solid masonry partition walls extending the full height of the rooms on either side of the passage. The right-hand room has a single chamfered spine beam with run-out stops, and a 20th-century fireplace that retains a bake oven. The fireplace in the left-hand room (backing onto the through-passage) also has a bake oven, but is otherwise much altered. The roof space of the house has not been inspected, and the rear wing has a 19th-century A-frame roof.
