Description

The Regency is a large detached house, likely built around 1880 by WC Oliver of Barnstaple, and subsequently altered in the late 20th century with an addition to the left side. It was originally a residential home and is constructed of cream brick with red brick and stone dressings, set beneath a slate roof with red crested ridge tiles and terracotta finials. A red brick chimney is on the south side.

The house has two storeys with a semi-basement and garret with an asymmetrical front. A prominent three-storeyed gabled projection is off-centre to the left, featuring mock timber framing in the gable. To the right is an entrance porch with a carved pointed arch springing from thick columns with carved capitals, and topped with Gothic openwork balustrade. Ground floor windows have cinquefoil transom lights with coloured glass. A second-floor window of the projection has three lights with pointed arches springing from columns, with sashes and transom lights filled with coloured glass.

The rear elevation, visible from the churchyard and Langleigh Road, features a centrally placed canted bay window with a wooden top storey incorporating a timber-framed gable and bargeboards. The side elevations feature pairs of similar gables.

The interior has not been inspected. Drawings for a similar house in Torrs Park were submitted to the Board by WC Oliver in April 1880, and while initially referred back, may have been revised and approved shortly afterwards. Southcliffe and Wilderbrook Nursing Home Annexe (not included in the listing) from 1882 are in a similar style.
