Description

St Martins is a detached house dated 1880, designed by WM Robbins of Ilfracombe in the Gothic style. It features red brick with yellow and black brick dressings, along with stone, red terracotta, and wood details. The roof is tarred and slated, topped with crested ridge tiles, and there is a red and yellow brick chimney on the right side of the ridge.

The house has two storeys with a garret and a three-window front. A projecting entrance porch is located in the center, with brickwork on either side forming a pair of large gables. The porch contains a doorway with a pointed arch, flanked by bands of red and black brick, and features half-glazed double doors with a colored glass fanlight. Above the porch is a wooden semi-octagonal bay window with a base of enriched terracotta panels and a pointed roof. The outer windows are set in tall, pointed arched yellow brick recesses that rise into the gables, which are adorned with traceried bargeboards. On either side of the porch, there are glazed conservatories topped with balustraded wooden balconies. The side walls have square wooden bay windows with half-timbered panels.

The interior has been partially inspected and retains original cornices, enriched doorframes, and the original staircase. This house is considered one of the best in Torrs Park. It is listed in the census return for April 1881 without an occupant and appears on a block plan from around 1879-80 in the Board of Health File.
