Description
The Old Slaughterhouse is a warehouse located south-southwest of Long Bridge in Barnstaple, built between 1840 and 1846 for Sir Bourchier Wrey of Tawstock House. Originally used as a slaughterhouse, it was later converted for railway use. The structure is made of coursed stone rubble, featuring rusticated quoins and architraves around its openings. It has a low-pitched dry slate hipped roof with overhanging eaves, and lead rolls at the hips and ridge. The building has a long rectangular plan and stands two storeys high.
On the northwest front, there is a wide, six-window range with large rectangular window openings that have rusticated stone jambs and flat arches with keystones. There are three loading doors situated between the ground and first storeys, set in plain openings with segmental dressed stone arches. Similar openings are found on the southeast side. Some window openings are blocked, and some frames appear to be later additions.
At the southwest end, there is a wide full-height doorway with rusticated stone jambs, topped by eaves that project to form a canopy. This doorway is not depicted in prints from 1846 or 1849. The northeast end features a ground storey opening with rusticated stone jambs and a likely later timber lintel with a relieving arch. The ground level around the building has been raised a few feet, and later floors have been inserted inside. The roof structure includes queen-post trusses. Notably, the northwest front is not shown on the 1840 tithe map but appears in prints from 1846 and 1849.
Historically, the Old Slaughterhouse was partially tenanted by Longbridge Motors.
