Description
The bus station offices, waiting room, and toilets in Barnstaple were built in 1922, with a small addition made in the late 20th century at the rear. Designed by E.T. Saunders, the borough surveyor, the building complements the adjoining Queen Anne's Walk. The front and side walls are made of limestone ashlar, while the rear wall is rendered. The structure has a flat roof, and the rear addition features a slated lean-to roof.
The building is one storey high and has a classical design with a three-bay portico. Each side of the portico is flanked by a doorway and two windows. The portico is supported by Tuscan columns, which are coupled at the ends, and it features an entablature with a pulvinated frieze. At the top, there is a tall parapet with a pedestal at each end that carries an urn. The centre of the parapet has a tall panel displaying the date 1922 and the town arms, flanked by pilasters that support an open curved pediment.
The windows have segmental heads with moulded archivolts resting on plain brackets, and below the sills are lugged aprons. Each pair of windows is flanked by coupled, fluted pilasters that support an entablature, parapet, and urns similar to those above the portico. The side elevations repeat this design. The wall at the rear of the portico and the doorways on either side were replaced in the late 20th century. To the left of the portico, next to the right-hand pair of pilasters, there is a tablet inscribed with "WALTER LEWIS CROOT, MAYOR, 1922."
The interior has been partly inspected and appears to be entirely plain. The building is included for its group value.
