Description
The barn and adjoining farm buildings, located approximately 15 metres southeast of Flitton Barton, date from the mid to late 19th century. They are constructed of uncoursed stone rubble, featuring red-brick arched heads on some windows and doors, and have gable-ended roofs covered with Welsh slate. The layout is L-shaped, with the barn oriented north-south and a range of shippons with lofts extending at right angles to the west. A farmyard is situated to the south.
The exterior of the barn faces west and includes a boarded loft door on the left, a ground-floor window with a flat stone-arched head to the left, and a cart entrance on the right that lacks doors and has a wooden lintel. At the rear, there is a two-leaf boarded door with a slightly segmental brick arched head. A gabled waterwheel house projects from the rear of the left end of the barn, featuring a doorway in its side wall. The shippons have boarded loft doors, ground-floor louvred windows, and boarded doors, all with brick segmental-arched heads.
Inside the barn, there is a five-bay roof supported by 19th-century bolted king-post trusses, two of which have been rebuilt. The waterwheel house contains a wheel pit, although the wheel itself has been removed. No other machinery associated with the waterwheel was noted during the survey conducted in 1987. This barn is part of a small group in the area that previously housed water-driven threshing machinery, similar to that found at West Park Farm. The building is an integral part of the larger farmstead group at Flitton Barton.
