Description

Shortridge Farmhouse is a farmhouse that may date back to 1669, as indicated by a sundial, although it likely has earlier features that are not visible. The building is constructed from roughcast rendered stone rubble and cob, topped with an asbestos slate roof that has a gable end on the left and a half-hipped right end. There is a rendered stack at the left gable end and two tall rendered lateral stacks at the rear of the hall and lower end.

The layout consists of a three-room and cross-passage plan, with a 19th-century staircase located at the rear of the passage. The hall and an inner room are situated to the left, while the lower end is to the right, featuring a front wing of a one-room plan that is currently used for farm storage, creating an overall L-shaped plan. There are 19th and 20th-century outshuts at the rear.

The farmhouse has two storeys and a four-window range. The windows were likely added in the late 19th or early 20th century and include variously paned two-light casements on the upper storey. The ground floor features a tripartite six-paned sash window with two-paned sidelight sashes in the hall and twin two-paned sashes in the inner room. A 20th-century gabled glazed porch with a brick plinth is positioned near the angle of the front wing.

A slate sundial above the hall window is dated 1669 and bears the initials 1L. A brief inspection of the interior revealed that 19th-century joinery, including panelled doors and the staircase, is completely intact. There is a rough, thin chamfered cross ceiling beam in the lower end. Although the roof was not inspected, an exposed chamfered timber wall plate suggests that the eaves may have been raised.
