Description
Claytown Farmhouse is a 17th-century farmhouse, with possible earlier origins, and it was extended in the 19th century. The farmhouse is constructed of rendered stone rubble and cob, with a thatched roof to the original range, a gable at the right end, and a slate roof to the 19th-century extension on the left end. A tall front lateral hall stack with offsets and a bread oven projection is visible, along with a brick ridge stack and a brick stack to the left gable end. As the interior was not accessible at the time of survey, a complete plan assessment could not be made, but it appears that the original core consists of a hall to the right and upper end with a cross-passage containing a staircase, and a lower end to the left. However, it’s suggested there is a straight joint to the left of the cross-passage staircase indicating the lower end may have been rebuilt. In the 19th century, a single-room range was added to the left end. The farmhouse is two storeys high with a four-window front. The windows are from the early 20th century, consisting of two 2-light casements with 6 panes per light to the left, and two 2-light casements with 2 panes per light to the right. There are two plank doors on the ground floor, each accompanied by a 20th-century window to the left. There are no rear outshuts; the interior was inaccessible at the time of survey.
