Description
Spiecott is a cottage dating from the late 18th century or early 19th century, with extensions added at each end and a porch constructed between 1942 and 1946. The building is made of unrendered stone rubble and features a hipped thatch roof with an ornamental ridge. There is a brick ridge stack that was originally at the gable end. The original structure was a two-room cottage, but internal partitions were removed in the 20th century, and two-storey extensions, each with a one-room plan, were added at both ends during the same period. The original cottage has a two-window range, with two-light casements on the upper storey and three-light casements on the ground floor flanking the porch. The left-hand extension includes a three-light window above French windows, while the right-hand extension has a two-light casement with six panes per light above a two-light casement with two panes per light. There is also a small lean-to at the rear right end. The interior has been mostly altered in the 20th century, but it is noted that a ceiling beam in the original cottage is said to have come from Eggesford House. The roof features rough pegged trusses with straight principals.
