Description
Searles is a house, probably from the 17th century, located in Chittlehamholt. It is constructed of whitewashed stone rubble and cob, topped with a thatch roof featuring rendered gable end stacks and a rear lateral hall stack. The original layout was likely a three-room and cross-passage plan, but the cross-passage and hall partition have been removed, allowing direct entry into the hall.
The house has a two-storey service extension with a canted corner at the left end, which was probably added in the 19th century and has an asbestos slate roof. The building stands two storeys high and has a four-window range. All windows are two-light casements, with two panes per light for the end windows and four panes per light for the two central windows. On the ground floor, there is a three-light window with six panes per light to the left of a 20th-century porch with a gabled roof. To the right of the porch is a three-light hall window and a two-light window at the right end, both with two panes per light. The interior has been significantly altered in the 20th century, and the roof has not been inspected.
