Description

Combrew Cottage, Hope Cottage, Sunnybank, and Sunnycott are a row of four adjoining cottages located in Chittlehamholt. The right-hand pair, Sunnycott and Sunnybank, likely dates from the early 18th century, while the left-hand pair is probably from the early 19th century. The cottages are constructed of stone rubble, with some cob on the right-hand pair, and Sunnycott is rendered. The right-hand pair features a thatched roof with gable end brick stacks, while the left-hand pair has a slate roof with a brick stack at the left end and an axial stack for Combrew Cottage.

The right-hand pair may have originally been a single dwelling, which was divided in the 19th century into a mirror plan pair of cottages, each consisting of two rooms and a cross-passage plan. These cottages have larger outer heated rooms and a staircase leading to the smaller inner rooms at the rear. The passage partition on the left side has been removed in Sunnybank. Internal partitions have also been removed in Combrew and Hope Cottage, but each originally had a single heated room to the left of the stairhall.

The cottages are two storeys high. The right-hand pair has a three-window range, featuring three-light casements with three panes per light, and two two-light windows with three panes per light above two gabled porches with slate roofs. The porch to the left (Sunnybank) was extended forward in the 20th century, while the porch to the right has a pointed stone arch, internal seats, and a plank inner door. Two buttresses flank a two-light window with six panes per light between the porches, along with a 20th-century window to the left and a three-light window with six panes per light to the right.

Combrew Cottage and Hope Cottage each have a single two-light casement above gabled slate porches. The porch for Combrew Cottage has been blocked with a window inserted, while the porch for Hope Cottage features a depressed pointed stone arch with a two-light casement having six panes per light to the left. There is a lean-to at the left end of Hope Cottage. The 19th-century joinery in Sunnybank is mainly intact, including a chamfered ceiling beam with run-out stops and a fireplace with a bread oven. The roof space is not accessible, but the straight principals are probably from the 18th century. The interior of Sunnycott has not been inspected.
