Description

This building, located at 73 High Street in Barnstaple, is a house with a shop that dates back to the mid-17th century. It has been altered and refurbished in the 1980s. The exterior features old red brick walls arranged in a rough Flemish bond, while the rear end facing Holland Walk is rendered. The roof is slated and hipped at both the front and back, with a brick chimney on the Holland Walk side.

The building stands three storeys tall and is two windows wide on High Street, with five windows at the third-storey level facing Holland Walk. The shop fronts on both sides are from the late 20th century. Most windows have straight arches with brick voussoirs, except for the right-hand window on the second storey of Holland Walk, which has a segmental brick arch. To the left of this window are two blocked windows with segmental arches, and between them is an existing window with a wooden lintel. All windows are fitted with late 20th-century six-paned sashes. There is a raised brick band between the second and third storeys on both fronts, which stops short of the rendered section on Holland Walk. Above the ground storey, there is the end of a similar band. The building also features deeply overhanging boxed eaves on both sides.

The interior has not been inspected, but a description from 1985 notes a 17th-century staircase turret on the north side, which was widened around 1800 to accommodate the current staircase. It also mentions reused 17th-century doors and door frames in the attics, as well as remnants of 18th-century plaster cornices in the first-floor rooms. A photograph from the 20th century shows a chimney with diagonally-set brick shafts on the right side wall.
