Description

No. 29 High Street is a shop and workrooms built in 1902 by WC Oliver of Barnstaple for Mr. N Liverton, an ironmonger and china dealer. The building features a limestone ashlar front with bands of dark brown stone and has a hipped slated roof. It stands three storeys tall with a narrow front and a two-window range on the third storey. The ground storey has a later 20th-century shop front, but the original flanking pilasters and the cornice above the fascia remain. The cornice has carved blocks with pointed heads at each end, supported by enriched consoles. The second storey showcases an arcade of three round arches that spring from square fluted columns, with recessed windows behind. Flanking these arches are a pair of Corinthian pilasters with brown stone bands on the shafts, supporting an entablature at the second-floor level. The third storey features similar pilasters and entablature, along with a central third pilaster and three-light stone mullioned-and-transomed windows. The interior has not been inspected. Historically, in 1902, Mr. Liverton operated shops at both Nos. 29 and 31 High Street, with No. 31 listed separately. The building is situated in a significant location between the Guildhall and one of the best early 19th-century fronts in the High Street, No. 30.
