Description

This is an early 18th-century house, later used as a shop, with some alterations made in the mid- to late-19th century. The front of the building is of red brick, likely faced with stone and timber, and has a slate roof. A rendered chimney stands on the left gable end. The house is three storeys high and has a three-window front. The ground floor and the lower part of the second floor have been extensively altered to accommodate a late-20th-century shop front. The upper floors retain segmental-headed windows with keystones; the windows on the second floor are shorter and have two-paned, two-light wooden casements. The third-floor windows are sash windows in moulded box frames, with a 1 over 2 pane configuration and margin panes. Giant Doric pilasters flank the front of the building, each featuring a section of pulvinated frieze above a prominent dentilled and bracketed cornice.

Historically, the property was described as ‘the Shoomakers Land of the Corporacion of Barnstaple’ in 1674. In 1921, it was sold by the Trustees of the Cordwainers’ Charity of Barnstaple.
