Description

East Whiddon is a farmhouse, now a house, dating from the 16th to 17th century, which was heightened and reroofed in the 20th century. It features painted cob and stone with a concrete tiled half-hipped roof. The building has a 3-cell through-passage plan, but a winder staircase has been inserted in the passage, and the stack has been demolished at the rear. It has an unusually tall stack made of roughly coursed stone with offsets, a tapered cap, and a brick shaft located at the left-hand rear corner, heating the lower end with a fireplace set across the angle. The house is two stories high and has a four-window range. The fenestration, which is unusual for Devon and dates from the late 17th to 18th century, consists of 2-light casements, with the one at the left end replaced. The three windows to the right are transomed and feature diamond leaded lights. The ground floor has similar fenestration, including a 3-light hall window, a small 2-light window at the right end, and a 2-light casement to the left of a 17th-century door with moulded cover strips. There is a two-storey outshut on the rear right side and a short gable-ended outshut on the left side. Inside, there is an ovolo moulded beam in the hall with rams horn style stops, and some early joinery remains, including an old door to one of the bedrooms. Access to the roof space is not available.
