Description

Burrows Farm West and Burrows Farm East is a farmhouse that has been divided into two houses, with origins dating back to the 16th century, and possibly earlier. The building is constructed of stone rubble and cob, which has been whitewashed and partially plastered, topped with a thatch roof featuring gable ends. The rear extension has a corrugated asbestos roof.

The layout follows a three-cell cross-passage plan, with an outshot to the front right and a right-angled extension to the rear. The farmhouse is two storeys high and has a three-window range on the front left. To the right, there is a stair turret and an outshut that is blind to the front, both covered by a thatch catslide roof. The building features rubble stacks with offsets at each gable end, along with an axial stack that backs onto the cross-passage. The right gable end stack includes a projecting bread oven. The windows are 2-light 19th-century timber casements, with two panes in each light; the left windows have leaded panes. The central door is from the 20th century.

Although the interior was not inspected, it is understood that the parlour in Burrows Farm West has a decorative plaster cornice and an overmantle dated 1698.

Burrows Farm East and Burrows Farm West are recognized for their significance as a well-preserved example of a Devon farmhouse, showcasing characteristic cob construction and retaining a substantial amount of its historic fabric.
