Description

The former stable block in the courtyard to the northwest of Bickleigh Castle is a building that has been divided into cottages and a visitors' centre. It is likely a 19th-century rebuilding of an earlier structure, with a 20th-century conversion into cottages. The building is constructed from local volcanic stone rubble and features a thatched roof with a plain ridge, gabled at both ends, and has a left end stack and an axial stack to the right of the center.

The plan is a single depth arrangement with a rectangular shape, where the cottage conversion is on the left and the visitors' centre is on the right. The height of the tie beams on the first floor suggests that the original layout probably included a loft over stable buildings, and the chimney stacks are likely later additions. The building stands two storeys tall and has an asymmetrical three-window front, with eaves thatched eyebrows over the first-floor windows. There are external stone steps to the left of center leading to a half-glazed door, a coach-house door to the right of the steps, and another doorway on the front at the right.

The external stairway leads to a first-floor plank door, with the eaves of the thatched roof projecting to form a porch. The windows are two-light casements with six panes per light. At the top of the building, there is a thatched clock turret that is weather-boarded and features an early 19th-century clock. The interior has been modernized. This attractive range is important to the setting of Bickleigh Castle.
