Description
The Old Smithy is a house that was formerly two cottages and a forge, along with an adjoining cob boundary wall. It likely dates from the 18th century and was modernised in the mid-20th century. The building features plastered cob on rubble footings, with cob or rubble stacks topped with brick. The main block has a thatched roof, while the rear is slated. It is L-shaped, with the main block facing north-west and a break in the line to the right of center. Originally, the forge was located to the right of the break, with a two-room cottage to the left and a one-room cottage at the rear of the left side. The structure is two storeys high and has a three-window front with 20th-century wooden sashes that include glazing bars, as well as 19th and 20th-century casements with glazing bars. The former forge entrance at the right end is now blocked and features a triple arrangement of 20th-century sashes. Inside, there is plain carpentry detail. The cob wall, which is plastered and built on rubble footings, extends from the back of the rear cottage to the south-east, meeting a similar cob wall belonging to Glen Cottage.
