Description
This agricultural store, located approximately 20 metres south of Easton Barton, is likely from the 16th century and was partly rebuilt in the 19th century. The front is made of neat mudstone and volcanic trap rubble, while the rear features partly plastered cob on rubble footings, topped with a corrugated iron roof that was formerly thatched. The building has a single room layout with small opposing doors in the long walls and a 20th-century garage door on the east end. The right end is built into a hillslope, with the ground level at first floor height, featuring a doorway there. It stands two storeys tall with a two-window front showcasing plain shuttered two-light windows under low segmental-headed arches. The central plank door has simple strap hinges. The roof is hipped to the left and gable-ended to the right. Inside, some cross-beams are well-finished with chamfered soffits, while others are rough and waney due to different construction phases. The five-bay roof, much repaired in the 19th century, retains much of its original 16th-century side-pegged jointed cruck truss structure. Some smoke-blackening suggests that this building may have once served as a late medieval house or detached kitchen, with the blackening concentrated at the apex indicating it may have been salvaged from or survived a fire.
