Description

The Old Farmhouse, located about 50 yards east of Coldtown Farmhouse, is a bastle house that has been converted into an agricultural store. It dates from the late 16th century to early 17th century, with alterations to the doors and windows made in the 19th century. There is a single-storey addition at the rear and a lean-to shed on the left side, which are from the 18th or 19th century. The building is constructed of random rubble with large quoins and a boulder plinth, topped with a Welsh slate roof. It measures 34 feet by 21 feet and stands two storeys tall, with walls that are 4½ feet thick.

To the left, there is probably an 18th-century doorway, with one 18th-century window to the right and two similar windows above. The original ground floor doorway, now blocked, is located in the shed on the left side and features a roll-moulded surround. Access to the upper floor is provided by a door at first floor level at the rear. The gabled roof has been rebuilt at the upper part of the gable.

Inside, the ground floor retains remnants of corbelling for a fireplace above. The first floor has fireplaces at both ends; the left fireplace is very small and narrow, with a rough stone lintel and jambs, while the right fireplace is a blocked large 18th-century feature with an older wooden bressumer above it. There is also a square recess to the left of the fireplace, and the windows and door have old wood lintels.
