Description

Hukely Farmhouse is a farmhouse and adjoining cider house, dating from around the mid-17th century, with the cider house likely built in the 18th or early 19th century. The structure features whitewashed rendered cob and stone, with a slate roof on the farmhouse and Roman tiles on the cider house. The end stacks include a right end stack that projects with a stone shaft and an axial stack.

The farmhouse has a single depth, four-room plan, with an entrance located to the right of center leading into a passage. There is a late 17th-century staircase at the rear of the passage. The flanking rooms appear to have served as parlours, with a kitchen on the left and an adjoining unheated service room at the extreme left. The cider house is likely a post-17th-century addition.

The exterior is two storeys high with an asymmetrical seven-window front. There is a 19th-century gabled porch to the right of center, featuring a panelled door with a rectangular fanlight. The windows consist of late 19th-century or 20th-century casements with glazing bars. A 20th-century door is located at the left end of the range, with a loft entrance above.

Inside, the ground floor has chamfered crossbeams, some with stops, while others may have stops buried in the wall plaster. The kitchen includes a large open fireplace with a bread oven and the remains of a curing chamber adjacent to the fireplace. The other fireplaces have modern grates, but earlier jambs and lintels may still be present. A notable feature is the good late 17th-century staircase, which has turned balusters, a first-floor balustrade, square-section newels (one of which has been replaced), and one original faceted finial. The roof has not been inspected but is reported to contain jointed cruck trusses.
