Description

The Methodist Chapel, originally a Bible Christian Chapel, was built in 1846. It features a snecked purple mudstone front, with mudstone rubble on the sides and rear, and a small amount of granite dressing. The roof is slate. The chapel has a small entrance lobby at the front with a gallery above. The gable end faces the street to the north-east and has a symmetrical front with three tall, narrow round-headed windows that have glazing bars; the upper panes feature gothic pointed-arch heads. The central window is slightly higher and shorter, positioned above a six-panel door with a fanlight that has a radial pattern of glazing bars. Above this window is a rectangular stone plaque inscribed 'Emanuel Chapel, 1846'. The low-pitched gable has coping on the kneelers and a granite ball finial at the apex. The left side of the building shows a patch where a former door has been blocked. Each side has a single tall round-headed window with glazing bars, and the rear end features a high oculus window. The interior contains mostly late 19th-century furnishings, including a gallery. At the front left corner, a rubble wall extends forward to the street, where it drops in height and returns across the front, serving as footings for late 19th-century cast-iron railings with spear heads, which include a central gate and line a stepped approach to the front door.
