Description
The Old Maltsters is a cottage, originally two cottages, dating from the 18th century. It is constructed of plastered cob on rubble footings, with rubble stacks topped by 19th and 20th-century brick, and features a thatched roof. The building now has a three-room layout facing southwest, situated between Nos. 10 and 12 Fore Street. The left room was originally a one-room cottage with a stack in the end party wall adjoining No. 12, while a cob crosswall separates it from the centre room. The centre and right rooms were originally part of a two-room cottage, with a rear lateral stack in the right room. The cottage is two storeys high and has an overall four-window front featuring late 19th to early 20th-century casements with glazing bars, along with two 20th-century doors. The arrangement of the centre and right three windows is symmetrical around the central door. Inside, the crossbeams in the outer rooms are stop-chamfered with run-out stops, and both fireplaces have been partly rebuilt with replacement lintels. This cottage is part of a row of 13 cottages, which together form the longest continuous run of thatch-roofed buildings in Devon and likely the longest in England.
