Description
Mr Rice's Cottage is a house, formerly two cottages, likely built in the mid 19th century. It is constructed of plastered cob and rubble, with rubble stacks topped by 20th-century thick brick chimney shafts and a slate roof that was originally thatch. The house has a double depth plan, facing southeast, with two rooms at the front and two at the rear, and features end stacks. It is two storeys high and has a balanced but not symmetrical three-window front, which includes late 19th-century and early 20th-century casements with glazing bars. The front entrance has paired four-panel doors located at the center and center right, both sharing a late 19th-century and early 20th-century monopitch slate-roofed hood with shaped valances at either end. Inside, most early features are concealed by 20th-century plaster and fittings, but an unfinished tree trunk crossbeam is visible in the right front room. The cottage is included for its group value.
