Description

Nos. 1 and 2 The Forge are a pair of small houses, likely dating from the late 18th to early 19th century, with a 19th-century extension. The construction is plastered cob on rubble footings, featuring rubble stacks with plastered brick chimney shafts, and a corrugated asbestos roof which was originally thatched. The buildings are now two two-room plan cottages facing south, with the left-hand cottage (No. 2) adjoining No. 3 Whites Cottages. Both cottages have axial stacks. Originally built as three one-room cottages, a further extension was added to the right (east) end in the 19th century. The front has an irregular four-window appearance. No. 2 features late 19th to early 20th century casement windows and a centre-left door, with a 20th-century gabled and slate-roofed porch. No. 1 has circa 1980 casement windows, half dormers with gabled roofs to the first floor, and a centre-right door set within a 20th-century gabled and slate-roofed porch. The roof is hipped to the right.

Internally, both cottages contain plain carpentry details. In No. 2, many of the earlier features are concealed by 19th-century plaster, but a chamfered spine beam with run-out stops is visible in the larger ground floor room. The fireplace is blocked. The roof structure consists of simple sets of purlins between cob crosswalls. No. 1 has a plain chamfered elm crossbeam in the larger western room, which also includes a large stone rubble fireplace with a chamfered oak lintel and two ovens. The roof of this property was not inspected.
