Description

No. 6 Fore Street is an 18th-century cottage located in Morchard Bishop. It is constructed of plastered cob on rubble footings, with a rubble stack topped with 20th-century brick and a thatched roof. The cottage has a one-room plan and faces southwest, situated between Nos. 5 and 7 Fore Street. It features a rear lateral stack and a secondary service room under a lean-to roof.

The building is two storeys high with a one-window front. The central first-floor window is a late 19th-century or early 20th-century casement with glazing bars, while the ground floor has a 19th-century three-light casement with slender glazing bars and small rectangular panes of glass, positioned to the left of a four-panel door with an overlight.

Inside, the cottage has a plain, square-sectioned axial beam and a large rubble fireplace with a chamfered oak lintel and a brick side oven. The stairs are located to the left of the fireplace. The roof consists of two bays supported by an A-frame truss with a pegged lap-jointed collar and a pegged mortice-and-tenon joint at the apex. The party wall to the left, which is part of No. 7 Fore Street, is made of plastered frame constructed from roughly squared pine timbers of relatively slender scantling, and the roof extends continuously over No. 7.

This cottage is part of a row of 13 cottages that together form the longest continuous run of thatch-roofed buildings in Devon, and likely the longest run in England.
