Description

Sandfield Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating from around 1600. It features plastered cob on stone footings, with a gable end roof made of slate and corrugated asbestos. The layout consists of a four-room, through passage plan with a rear wing. The hall and kitchen, which may have originally been an inner room, are located to the left of the passage. To the right, there is one unheated room and another heated room at the extreme right, which has an internal end stack. An axial stack that backs onto the passage heats the hall, while the kitchen is heated by the internal end stack. All stacks have brick shafts, and the stairs are situated at the rear of the hall.

The exterior features a front with a range of four windows. All first-floor windows are late 20th-century three-light metal casements set in older oak frames. The ground floor windows include three lights in the kitchen, four lights in the hall, two lights in the unheated room, and three lights in the extreme right-hand room. There is a rendered late 20th-century porch. The rear of the house has windows only in the wing, including a first-floor two-light casement with twelve leaded panes per light.

Inside, the hall has one and two half axial ceiling beams that are chamfered with hollow step stops. There is a planked door to the stairs with HL hinges, and a wattle and plaster partition separates the hall from the kitchen. The roof space is inaccessible, but substantial principals are visible in the upper rooms, featuring large purlins that are not obviously jointed crucks but sit well down in the walls.
