Description

ST OO NE KENTISBEARE 8/88 Sandfield Farmhouse - II Farmhouse. Probably circa 1600. Plastered cob on stone footings; gable end slate and corrugated asbestos roof. Plan: 4 room, through passage plan house with rear wing. Hall and kitchen (possibly originally an inner room) to the left of the passage, one unheated room to the right, and another room to the extreme right, heated by an internal end stack. Axial stack backing onto passage heats hall; internal end stack heats kitchen. All stacks with brick shafts. Stairs to rear of hall. 2 storeys. Exterior Front: 4 window range; all first floor windows with late C20 3-light metal casements set in older oak frames. Ground floor windows: 3 lights to kitchen, 4 lights to hall, 2 lights to unheated room, 3 lights to extreme right hand room. Rendered late C20 porch. Rear: windows only to wing; with a first floor 2 light casement, with 12 leaded panes per light. Interior: Hall with 1 and 2 half axial ceiling beams, chamfered with hollow step stops. Door to stairs, planked with HL hinges. Wattle and plaster partition between hall the kitchen. Roof: space inaccessible; substantial principals visible in upper rooms with large purlins, not obviously jointed crucks, but sitting well down in the walls.
