Description

Hollis Farmhouse is a Grade II listed building that originally served as a single farmhouse but has been divided into two dwellings. It dates from the early 19th century, although it retains some features from the 17th century. The structure is constructed of roughcast cob on a stone plinth and has a hipped slate roof with lead rolls at the hips and ridge.

The layout follows a central staircase plan, with the main rooms located on either side of the entrance hall, and two rear service wings, one of which is largely from the 17th century and is the only remnant of the earlier house. It is likely that the house was split into two separate dwellings early in the 19th century, which involved adding a second entrance on the right side that leads to a stair hall inserted into the back of one of the main rooms. The end stacks provide heat to the principal rooms.

The exterior features a symmetrical front with three windows. The first floor has a central round-headed horned sash window with nine panes above and eight below, flanked by two 16-pane hornless sash windows. The ground floor includes a central porch with a moulded canopy supported by simple posts, a panelled reveal and soffit to the round-headed doorway, and a panelled door with a semi-circular fanlight. There are horned sash windows on either side of the porch, with twelve panes above and eight below. The eaves are overhanging, and the side elevations show irregular fenestration, with the left side being entirely 20th century.

Inside, some early features can still be seen in one of the rear wings, including a chamfered ceiling beam with run-out stops, a lintel from a former end fireplace, and a re-used ovolo-moulded stone jamb.
