Description

This is a cottage formed from the subdivision of a larger house. It dates from the 17th century and was remodelled and extended in the 19th century. The walls are plastered cob on rubble footings, with rubble and brick stacks, and a thatched roof. It is now a three-room cottage facing south-west, connected to Shoplands Cottage. The cottage incorporates what were formerly the hall, through passage, and small service room of the original house, alongside a 19th-century extension to the north-west of that service room. A lateral stack is situated to the right of the extension, and an axial stack is within the party wall shared with Shoplands Cottage, both being 19th-century additions. The front has an irregular three-window arrangement with late 19th and 20th century casement windows, some with glazing bars. A door is positioned right of centre, sheltered by a late 19th-century porch with a gabled slate roof, crested ridge-tiles, glazed sides, trelliswork, and shaped bargeboards. The roofline and eaves extend over the 19th-century extension, and it is half-hipped at one end. The interior largely reflects 19th-century refurbishment, but retains a 17th-century oak plank-and-muntin screen to the left of the through passage, exhibiting chamfered and scroll-stopped muntins. The roof space is not accessible.
