Description
Lower Shoplands is a cottage that was part of a former farmhouse, dating from the early to mid-17th century. It has been altered in the 19th century and modernised around 1980. The building is constructed of plastered cob and rubble, with rubble stacks, one featuring granite quoins and 19th-century brick tops, and a thatched roof.
The cottage has two rooms and faces southeast, occupying a much-altered hall, through passage, and service room of the original 17th-century farmhouse. There is a projecting lateral stack at the rear of the left room and a projecting end stack for the right room. It is two storeys high with a three-window front featuring 20th-century casements. The ground floor is fully covered by an outshot and a large 20th-century conservatory, with a central door. The roof is hipped to the right, and the end stack is made of exposed volcanic rubble with granite ashlar quoins. The rear corner of the cottage is rounded.
The interior has likely undergone significant alterations in the 19th and 20th centuries, but 17th-century features may still be concealed. The roof has not been inspected. The remainder of the farmhouse is occupied by Rowan Tree Cottage.
