Description
The linhay and calf house, located 4 metres south-west of West Fursham Farmhouse, is likely from the 18th century, with possible origins in the late 17th century. It features a small extension from 1839, as indicated by a date inscription. The structure is primarily built of cob on stone rubble footings, with a 19th-century extension made of stone rubble and some 20th-century concrete block patching. The roof is covered with corrugated iron, which was formerly thatch.
The building has a long range that faces onto what was once a farmyard to the north-west. The main section on the right is an 8-bay linhay that remains mostly open-fronted. To the immediate left, separated by a cob crosswall, is a cartshed, which is an open bay, followed by the calf house that has a front doorway. At the left end, the 19th-century extension includes another cartshed with a full-height doorway.
The linhay is of Alcock's linhay type T1. It features full-height oak posts that rest on granite pads. Large, roughly-finished crossbeams are notched into and tusk-tenoned through the posts. The tops of the posts support the outer principals of A-frame roof trusses, which have pegged and spiked lap-jointed collars. The oak lintel of the calf house doorway is inscribed with the year 1839. The roof is gable-ended on the right and hipped on the left.
