Description
Torhill Cottage is a cottage, probably from the early 19th century, that was renovated and enlarged around 1965. It is constructed of plastered cob on stone rubble footings and features a thatched roof. The original layout was a two-room plan cottage facing south, with the larger right (east) room having a disused gable-end stack. There is a one-room plan extension from around 1960 on the left end. The cottage is two storeys high and has a three-window front that is regular but not symmetrical, featuring casements from around 1965 without glazing bars. The left window on the ground floor has been converted into a French window. The doorway has been relocated from the center to the left side of the original cottage and includes a 20th-century door with a contemporary shingle-roofed porch. A similar door and porch can be found on the side of the extension. The main roof is steeply pitched with a half hip to the left, while the extension has a flat roof. Inside, there is plain carpentry detail where it is exposed. Torhill Cottage is situated near the main A30 road, which is embanked at this location, causing traffic to pass close to the thatch roof.
