Description
East Fursham Farmhouse is a house that was formerly a farmhouse, dating from the mid or late 17th century and partly rebuilt in the 19th century. It is constructed of plastered cob on stone rubble footings, with some sections rebuilt using stone rubble and brick stacks from the 19th century. The roof is thatched.
The building has a three-room plan, facing southeast and built down a gentle slope. The main room is located at the uphill left end and features an axial stack that backs onto the middle room, which is part of the original 17th-century structure. The other two rooms, including the entrance hall and stair, were likely rebuilt in the 19th century. The cob is exposed at the rear, and there is no indication that the 19th-century section is an extension. The right room has a gable-end stack, and the house is two storeys high.
The exterior displays an irregular arrangement of four windows, which are 20th-century casements with glazing bars, and there are two 20th-century plank doors. The roof has gable ends.
Inside, the 17th-century room features a crossbeam that is soffit-chamfered with scroll stops, and the exposed joists are scratch-moulded. The joists against the end wall have slight soffit chamfers for the last 100 millimeters, creating a unique reverse stop. The fireplace is made of granite ashlar with an oak lintel and a chamfered surround, and it includes a side oven with a 19th-century cast iron door. The remainder of the house contains 19th-century joinery and plain details, while the right end fireplace has a replacement lintel.
The roof is not accessible, but the bases of the A-frame truss principals are visible. The trusses over the left room have larger scantling and may date from the 17th century.
