Description

Monks Cottage is probably the remains of two cottages, dating from the late 17th century. It is built with plastered cob on rubble footings, with stone rubble or cob for the stack, topped with 19th and 20th century brick, and has a thatched roof. The cottage now has a two-room plan, with an axial stack between the rooms. It is likely that the larger right-hand room originates from an original two-room cottage, and the left-hand room from a separate single-room cottage. The west-facing front has an irregular three-window arrangement of 19th and 20th century casement windows with glazing bars. A small thatched gable sits over the central first-floor window. Both front doors, likely dating from the late 17th century, are plank doors with strap hinges. The right-hand door has a 20th century buttress beside it. The roof is half-hipped to the left and continuous with Sachristan Cottage to the right. A rear elevation window is an original oak two-light frame with a chamfered mullion on the first floor, near the south end.
