Description

The stables located approximately 25 metres north-east of Ayshford Court date back to the 17th century and were refurbished in the late 19th century. They are constructed from local stone rubble and feature a slate roof, which was likely thatch originally. The stable block faces south-east and is situated across the lane from a 16th-century barn.

The building underwent significant alterations in the late 19th century, which affected the arrangement of doorways, windows, and loading hatches, although the basic structure remains from the 17th century. The stables include a hayloft above.

On the exterior, the front has three stable doorways, each accompanied by a window to the right. The doorway at the right end is taller than the others and features a segmental head, as does its corresponding window. There is also a smaller window to the left of this doorway. The hayloft has an irregular arrangement of four windows and a loading hatch located left of centre. All the joinery is from the late 19th century, with plain, unglazed windows. The roof is gable-ended.

Inside, the carpentry details are all from the 17th century, made of oak and finished neatly. The crossbeams are soffit-chamfered with run-out stops. The six-bay roof is supported by A-frame trusses with pegged lap-jointed collars and dovetail halvings. The base of each principal is lap-jointed onto wall posts that are set into the top ends of the crossbeams. This construction suggests that the hayloft may have originally been open on both sides and could have been built as a linhay, although this is difficult to confirm due to most of the masonry being replaced or refaced in the late 19th century.
