Description
The lime kilns at Pretty Bench Quarry, built in the 19th century, are constructed from local sandstone conglomerate rubble. They feature a triple draw kiln with three draught tunnels facing south-west. Each tunnel has a low elliptical outer arch and a similar lower inner relieving arch. The draw pits are enclosed by rusted iron bars, and the front wall rises to the remains of a rubble parapet. The kiln pits have been infilled for safety reasons. At the south-east end, there is a lean-to storage room that is now missing its roof. The new road works at the back (north-west) are very close to the kiln and obscure that side, along with any evidence of a loading ramp. The kiln is reported to have been in operation as a lime kiln until around 1920.
