Description

This chest tomb, located about 7 metres southeast of the porch of the Church of St Mary, dates from the early 17th century and is made of volcanic trap. It features a moulded oversailing lid with a Gothic inscription in relief on a frieze above the chest. Although the inscription is partly illegible, it was recorded by Beatrix Cresswell as commemorating Simon Pidsley, who died in 1609. This tomb is of high quality, and relief-carved lettering from the 17th century is a rare survival on memorials in the county.
