Description

Lower Ford Farmhouse is a farmhouse that underwent remodelling in the mid-19th century, although it is based on an earlier structure. The building is constructed of cob with a stone plinth and is plastered, topped with a gabled-end slate roof, while the rear wings are made of rubble stone. Originally designed as a three-room, through-passage plan, it features end stacks with brick shafts and stands two storeys tall.

The front of the farmhouse presents a symmetrical arrangement with four windows, all dating from the 19th century, each consisting of three lights with 21 leaded panes per light. A central latticework porch leads to a wide planked door. The right-hand rear wing is the older section of the building and has been widened, likely during the 19th century. This wing includes four-light openings on each floor, supported by stanchions and fitted with internal shutters, along with two three-light windows on the first floor and two two-light windows on the ground floor. The other rear wing has one three-light casement window on each floor. There is evidence of a former stairwell built into the thickness of the left-hand end chimney, and the rear door to the passage has been blocked.

The attractive mid-19th century remodelling, with its complete period fenestration at the front, adds to the interest of this significantly older house.
