Description
The raised pavement in Bow is approximately 140 metres long, stretching from Station Road to the east and Crispins Cottage to the west. It likely dates from the 18th century, with some alterations made in the 19th century. The walkway features a pitched cobble surface, with sections of late 19th century grey machine-brick paths and one concrete path added. The front revetment is made of local mudstone, topped with mudstone and granite coping, and the pavement stands about 0.6 metres above the road.
At the eastern end, the pavement ramps up from road level. There is a flight of mudstone steps outside Sutton View that breaks the revetment towards the left. Near the centre, outside Chanterhayes, there is a brick-roofed vault beneath the pavement with plain wooden gates leading to the street. Close by, outside the Church Room, a cobbled ramp leads up to the pavement and features a cast iron water pump from the late 19th to early 20th century near the bottom. The revetment walls of this ramp are adorned with plain 20th century iron railings with timber posts on the front side, while the rear has late 19th century iron railings with fleur-de-lys heads alternating with hoops, set in granite coping.
To the west, outside the Post Office, there is a flight of slate steps flanked by engaged red machine-brick piers topped with granite pyramid caps. Similar flat-roofed vaults under the pavement are also present, each with plain gates to the road and flanked by matching piers. Near the western end, there is a flight of mudstone steps leading from the road to the pavement outside No. 1 Felton House.
