Description
There are two adjoining chest tombs located approximately 20 meters south of the Church of St Peter in Zeal Monachorum. One tomb is dated 1811 and commemorates Richard Stranger, while the other, dated 1851, is in memory of John Sweet. Both tombs are surrounded by mid-19th century railings.
The Stranger chest tomb, situated to the north, is made of brick and features a plain Portland stone lid. The lid is inscribed in bold serif capitals, noting the death of Richard Stranger in 1811, along with that of his infant son who also died that year. The Sweet chest tomb, located to the south, is constructed entirely of Portland stone. It has a moulded plinth, a low-pitched hipped lid, and pilasters at each corner. The east end of this tomb is inscribed in plain capitals and serif italics, preceded by the Gothic word 'sacred', recording the death of John Sweet of Burstone in 1851. Both tombs are enclosed by cast-iron spear railings, which feature corner shafts topped with vase caps.
