Description
A pair of mirror-plan houses, numbers 38 and 40, located on the west side of St Peter Street in Tiverton, were likely built in the 1830s. Number 40 is currently used as offices. The buildings are constructed with a grey ashlar basement and Flemish bond brickwork above. The roof is hidden by a parapet. Axial stacks rise through the roof, featuring brick shafts with moulded stone cornices and crested chimney pots. Each house has a depth of two rooms and a width of one, with a staircase rising off an entrance passage situated between the front and rear rooms.
The exterior presents a symmetrical two-by-two window front, with a central blind section and doorways on the left and right. Steps lead down to a shared passage between the houses, providing access to rear service entrances. The doorways are pilastered and feature round-headed moulded arches with keyblocks. They each have six-panel doors with fielded panels and roll moulding, along with plain fanlights. Basement windows are 12-pane sashes; ground-floor windows are 16-pane sashes with rusticated flat arches. The outer windows on the first and second floors are 12-pane sashes, while the inner windows are 16-pane sashes. Some small-pane sashes remain on the rear elevation.
The interior of number 40 retains a stick baluster staircase with a mahogany handrail and four-panel doors. Iron spear-headed railings run along the front of the properties.
