Description
This is an 18th and 19th century town house, located at 42 St Peter Street, Tiverton, and it has been converted into flats. It was reportedly used as a HM Customs Office in the mid-19th century, with alterations carried out around 1900. The building is constructed with thick walls and has a plain stucco façade, topped with a slate roof. Chimney stacks are present on the left side, featuring rendered shafts and terracotta pots.
The house is double-depth and originally heated by a stack on the left side. The current layout includes a large stairhall in the front right corner, dating back to around 1900, and has been altered with some repartioning to accommodate the flats. There's a front door located to the right of the centre.
The exterior is three stories high, plus a basement, and features an asymmetrical four-bay front. A boxed eaves cornice runs along the top. The central doorway is wide with a front door consisting of four fielded panels. To the left is a glazed four-panel infill containing geometric stained glass from around 1900. A large, segmented arched opening to the left features a recessed 20th-century tripartite sash window. Cast-iron area railings are set across the archway, with steps leading down to the basement. To the right of the front door is a tall, three-centred arched stair window with margin panes and geometric stained glass from around 1900. The first floor has three four-pane horned sash windows, and the second floor has four similar sash windows, two of which are horned.
The interior has been partially inspected. At least one reeded doorcase from the 1850s remains. The staircase from around 1900 has turned balusters. Other historic features may be present elsewhere within the building.
