Description
This headstone, dating from the late 18th century, is located about 12 metres south of the west end of the aisle of the Church of St Mary in Bickleigh. It is made of slate and features a later lead capping to help preserve the inscription. The headstone has a shouldered design with a rounded top. While some parts of the inscription are difficult to read, it is significant as it recounts the presumably accidental death of Edward Gibb, a parishioner. The inscription states that he was killed by a knife wound while assisting Rob. Hulsey in butchering a pig at Little Burn in the parish. The injury, located in his right thigh, caused him to bleed excessively, leading to his death within 15 minutes on Monday, December 21, 1794, at the age of 52 years.
