Description

East Stoodleigh Barton is a farmhouse with origins dating back to the 17th century or earlier, featuring some alterations from the 19th and 20th centuries. The building is colourwashed and rendered, likely made from stone rubble, and has a corrugated asbestos roof that is gabled at both ends. It has a projecting stack on the left end and two projecting lateral stacks at the rear.

Originally, the farmhouse had a three-room layout with a through passage, but it has been modified to include four rooms, with a staircase added to the passage. It is not entirely clear which room was the lower end, but it is likely that the right-hand room was originally the lower end. The house may have been reoriented, with the old hall becoming part of the service area, and a kitchen added on the left in the 18th or 19th century. The former lower end has been repurposed as a parlour, and the partition between the two right-hand rooms has been removed.

The exterior of the farmhouse is two storeys high and features an asymmetrical five-window front. There is a 20th-century glazed porch at the front door, which leads to the stair hall located to the right of centre. A 20th-century French window with glazing bars is located at the extreme right. The windows are attractive 19th-century timber casements with three and four lights.

Inside, both left-hand fireplaces include bread ovens, with the first from the left, likely the original hall, featuring a moulded stone on the right-hand jamb. There is a stud partition wall between this room and the passage. The front door is made of 17th-century timber. The roof has not been inspected, but it is reported that the roof timbers are from the 19th or 20th century.
